Continuing on in Mark 7 I can imagine Jesus is getting frustrated with his disciples as well. See what he says and let's break it down a little.
Starting with verse 17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.
18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; (Jesus is asking his disciples why don't you understand? You have been with me and should know these things.)
19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? (Jesus puts it in plain terms, what you eat does not make you unclean because it passes on through; verse 20 it is what you speak, your actions, these are what defiles or makes one unclean.)
20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
It is what is in your heart that defiles you; what you mind thinks affects your heart, and that is where we are either clean or unclean. When you look at all Jesus mentions it probably steps on many of our toes multiple times. Fortunately, we can ask forgiveness and be forgiven.
Jesus' whole premise here is that the Pharisees created their own "traditions" and "rules" to live by, which were not then, nor ever God's rules and then they are presumptuous enough to present themselves as HOLY. What truly defiles one? Where are you today in your state? Clean, unclean, or slightly dirty (which is unclean)? Thanks for reading. Tis time for me to ask forgiveness and be cleanse. Love you all.
In Christ's Love and Grace
Johnny
